As a multidisciplinary artist Jeltje Schuurmans (1996) investigates through installation, sculptural objects, video, and performance the psychological processes of the brain and their translation to the body. With her work she questions how the collective unconsciousness of society has structured our way of living and how we are conditioned, in order to create awareness around these fundamentally rooted structures of our modern society.
The leading factor in her work is to convey an often uncomfortable physical experience through tactility in both moving image and material.
Themes such as control, feminism, objectification, acceptance, and the body often cross her practice.
‘….. In between the large white spaces that appear in Schuurmans’ works emerges a desire towards serenity and healing, as well as the tactility of being human in-between body and ego. ‘
